Everyone can taste wine, but how to identify what you are tasting is a learned skill. This course begins with a tasting of the essential components of salt, acid, fat, sugar and umami and pairs. Students will see the effects of these on their palate, and when these components are followed by wine.
We will also teach how to identify what is in the glass (structure, complexity, tannins, flavours and aromas), and link to the reasons or sources of where those elements might be coming from. We will discuss how to evaluate wines for quality and ageability.
We will also discuss wine terminology, and how you can better describe your likes or dislikes to someone in a wine shop or restaurant to get a wine you are more likely to enjoy.
This course aims to demystify wine tasting, with the goal to further enjoyment and to simplify wine selection in a shop or restaurant. An essential for any wine lover.
